How to Get a Medical Marijuana Card in Oklahoma

Posted on May 31st, 2023 to Education

While Oklahoma has not yet allowed recreational cannabis as of 2023, the state went legal for medical purposes in 2018. The Sooner State wasted no time getting up and running—OK opened its very first medical marijuana dispensary soon after. Today, OK is considered one of the most relaxed medical cannabis states in the country.

Nevertheless, to purchase medical cannabis in the state, you will need to contain an Oklahoma medical marijuana card. However, obtaining your cannabis license in OK is not as complicated as in some other states. Take a look at how to get a medical card in Oklahoma below.

How to Get a Medical Card in Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority (OMMA) oversees the Oklahoma medical marijuana card application process in the state. Take a look at the three steps to obtaining your medical card in Oklahoma below.

1. Obtain a Patient Physician Recommendation Form

The physician recommendation form is simply a form from your doctor that recommends you for MMJ treatment. This form must be filled out by a state-approved doctor and must be dated within 30 days of your application. One of the best things about MMJ in OK is the fact that you don’t have to have a qualifying medical condition. The state does not have a set list of conditions. Instead, the state leaves the discretion up to a qualified doctor to decide if their patient would benefit from medical cannabis treatment.

2. Access the OMMA Application Portal

To fill out your MMJ application, you will first create an account using your email address on the OMMA license portal page. It can be helpful if you have everything ready to go when you create your account. However, if you come across something you do not have, creating an account allows you to return to complete your application once you get started.

3. Supply the Requested Documents and Information

The OMMA offers a helpful checklist that discloses everything you will need to fill out your application. A few items you will need in addition to the recommendation from your doctor include:

  • An acceptable photo that meets the photo guidelines set forth by the state (i.e. eye-level, white or off-white background, and no more than six months old)
  • Proof of identity, such as your OK driver’s license
  • Proof of OK residency (e.g. utility bill or prior year’s tax return)

Once your application is complete, you will be asked to pay your non-refundable application fee of $100. Patients that are veterans, disabled, or receiving Medicaid or Medicare can also supply proof of this information and only pay $20 for the application.

How to Get a Medical Card in Oklahoma Out-of-State

Oklahoma implemented a reciprocity approach for medical marijuana patients from out of state. A handful of other states have done the same, but there are a few caveats in OK.

Essentially, reciprocity means if you are already a medical marijuana patient in another state, you can purchase cannabis at an OK medical dispensary. In OK, however, you have to obtain an out-of-state medical marijuana card in OK first. The process to obtain an out-of-state license involves its own brief application process, as well as paying a $100 fee plus an additional $4.30 for credit card processing. The license is valid for 30 days only.

During your application, you will be asked to provide:

  • Your state-issued medical marijuana card
  • Proof of your identity, such as your passport or state-issued driver’s license
  • A digital photo

An important caveat with OK’s reciprocity program for out-of-staters is that OK only recognizes government-issued medical cards from other states. This means that patients with physician-supplied medical marijuana cards or prescriptions cannot obtain their out-of-state license in OK. For example, doctors prescribe medical marijuana in Texas, not a government entity, and Texans don’t get a card. Therefore, Texans cannot apply for an out-of-state license in OK.

How to Get a Medical Marijuana Card If You Live In Texas

The Compassionate Use Program (CUP) in Texas allows qualifying patients to obtain a prescription for low-THC medical cannabis (no more than 0.5 percent by weight). However, The Lonestar State does not issue an actual card or license. Therefore, qualifying patients simply see a doctor, obtain a prescription, and then visit a dispensary to pick up their prescribed cannabis.
